Fair-minded and practical, he sees his newfound compulsion to protect abandoned eggs as his way of making up for the many adult birds consumed by his species. He takes it particularly hard when an egg that he attempts to transport to another nest is rejected or preyed upon, and he sometimes doubts whether he is making a difference, but continues to try all the same. Now a middle-aged fox, Birdcatcher has acquired his fair share of wisdom throughout his life, but he often allows his heart to make his decisions for him, rather than thinking through his options; still, he carries himself with an air of intelligence and a humble sense of virtue.
